Schroth Method

The Schroth method will teach you how to adopt an improved posture and how to develop the strength and movement habits to maintain it in life (in your activities of daily living).

Is involves cognitive, sensory-motor and kinesthetic training to teach you how to improve your 3D posture and shape.

It helps to think of your spinal curves as having 2 main components, a structural component and a postural component.

The ‘structural component’ refers to the bony malformations usually found in the vertebrae at the center of the primary curve and also the soft tissue restrictions that accompany them.

During upright posture, we are under the influence of gravity.  The compressive effect of gravity on our spine is to increase its curves.   When posture is weak, our spinal curves are exaggerated.  In the presence of scoliosis this means the sideways curves and rotations are often worse than they need to be, that is, worse than may be explained by the structural component.  This is what we call the ‘postural component’.

The Schroth method is an exercise method that aims to improve the postural component of the curve, thereby reducing the asymmetric loading and lessening the power of the progressive cycle.

Individual aims may include:

·       Stop/decrease curve progression

·       Improve posture and movement function

·       Decrease pain symptoms

·       Improve breathing capacity

·       Improve brace effectiveness

·       Prevent/delay surgery

·       Improve psychological outlook and quality of life
